Prayer Request

My grandma has been in the hospital since 2 days before Christmas (other than a one week stint at a nursing home that did not work out good.) I can see that she is growing tired of it all and wants to go home.

Please pray for healing for her! Please pray that she will be able to go home soon!

Thank you so much!

(heading out to see her in a few...)

My Review of October Baby Movie

From American Family Studios in association with Provident Films

I’ve always been prolife, and I grew up helping out with various prolife causes, and I was interested to watch a movie on the topic.

October Baby is a story of a girl who finds out her mother tried to abort her, a girl who has physical and psychological problems because of that fact, a girl who goes on to forgive all those who have hurt her.

Who it is for:

Those who enjoy a touching movie about family.

I would say this movie is “safe” for kids in their preteens-teens to watch, perhaps with an adult watching with them if they are younger - because of a bit of talk about abortion, and in a vague way, sex.

Quality of the movie:

The acting and overall quality of this movie were very good.

What I liked:

The story was emotional and easy to get into.

I found that this movie presented a unique twist on the prolife message, different from other prolife movies out there.

What I didn’t like:

There was one random scene where the girl mentioned that she was a virgin and acted like it was a bad thing, I found this unnecessary and just out of place.

My Conclusion:

This was a pretty good movie. If it weren’t for my one negative I would give it five out of five stars, but instead…

… I give October Baby 4 out of 5 stars.

My Review of Shadow in Serenity

Written by: Terri Blackstock
Published by: Zondervan

I enjoy reading Terri Blackstock’s writing, she usually combines great suspense with a great story. Shadow in Serenity doesn’t really contain the suspense part, but it does have a good story.

Carny Sullivan is a single mom who is doing her best to raise her son in a more traditional way than she was brought up. Carny has settled in the small, peaceful, town of Serenity and is happy there… until Logan Briscoe comes in to town. Logan Briscoe is a smooth talking man with a plan, and Carny is convinced he is up to no good.

Who the book is for:

Contemporary fiction readers, especially women.

What I liked:

The story was interesting and unique, and I was kept entertained.

What I didn’t like:

I kind of missed the suspense that you can usually find in Terri Blackstock books.

My conclusion:

This was a good book, and I enjoyed reading it.

I give Shadow in Serenity 4 out of 5 stars.

I received this book free to review from Zondervan. The opinions expressed in this review are my true thoughts and feeling regarding this book. I am disclosing this information in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

My Review of Beware of Christians

From: Provident Films

I was excited to watch Beware of Christians because it was about a group of guys who ‘supposedly’ decide to turn their “religion” into more of a Jesus lifestyle… in Europe. I know we all need to live more like Jesus lived, and I was hoping to get advice and inspiration on the subject.

Who it is for:

Teens through adults, though I think teens would enjoy it the most.

Some talk of sex, drinking, nude beaches, etc.. Guys without shirts, bikinis on women, etc.. may make it inappropriate for children.

Quality of the movie:

The quality of this movie was actual quite good, though I think it was recorded by the four men who it is all about.

What I liked:

The parts where they talked about materialism really inspired me, and got me thinking of how I need to change in that area.

It was interesting to hear the beliefs that some of the people in Europe have about various topics, and to hear about the beliefs of the four guys who made this movie, as well.

What I didn’t like:

A lot of the movie was just some college guys having fun on a trip, when I first started watching it was hard to even want to keep watching, thinking I wasn’t going to “get” anything from this.

I thought the movie would be more about the guys living out their faith, but aside from mentioning that they helped out the homeless for a bit, it was mostly just the guys interviewing people on what they thought of Christianity, etc..

My Conclusion:

This movie wasn’t all I thought it would be, but it was kind of interesting.

I give Beware of Christians 3 out of 5 stars.

My Review of The Mighty Macs

I received this movie to review, and that is why I chose to watch it… I don’t know that I would have otherwise chosen to watch a sports movie about nuns.

The Mighty Macs shares the story of a woman who, for some reason she fails to share with us in the film, has decided that she really wants to coach basketball. She coaches a team of girls at a Catholic college full of nuns, and leads them to be national champs.

Who it is for:

This movie would be especially enjoyable for basketball fans, I am guessing.

This movie is appropriate for all ages.

Quality of the movie:

I was really impressed with the quality of the movie overall, and especially with the quality of the acting.

What I liked:

This was an inspiring film, based on a true story. I especially enjoyed reading about what had become of the real life women portrayed in the movie, at the end of the film.

This was a well made film.

What I didn’t like:

I felt like this story didn’t have enough “heart” to it. I can enjoy a sports movie, on occasion, if they have something more to them than sports… while I felt this movie was tried to tell more of a story than it did, I don’t think it took the time it should have to share that story.

My Conclusion:

The Mighty Macs was an okay movie to watch, once, I don’t think I will be watching it again.

I give this movie 3 out of 5 stars.

My Review of Courageous (the movie)

From: Sherwood Pictures, Provident Films, Affirm Films, TriStar, and Sony Pictures

I must admit, I wasn’t a fan of any of the Sherwood Picture films before I watched Courageous. While I thought Fireproof was a well made movie, I disagreed with most of the “morals” preached in the movie - okay, that sounds weird, but I am not going to type out all my thoughts on that subject right here and now, so that will have to do.

I chose to watch Courageous for two reasons:

A. I read the book and found it quite good.
B. I received a free copy to review (that is also why I chose to read the book.)

Who it is for:

While this movie was made specifically for dads, I think it can be entertaining and uplifting to others as well.

I didn’t find the content too violent or mature, so I think that this movie should be appropriate for anyone over the age of 10 - when watched with a parent or other adult who would be willing to answer any questions they may have.

Quality of the movie:

I found that the quality of this movie and the acting were quite good. I especially thought the acting of the gang members was quite realistic.

What I liked:

This movie shares the gospel message, along with other “biblical” messages in a quality film - while some would still call this “preachy”, I think it will have a greater influence than lower quality Christian films.

This movie definitely qualified as "family friendly" to me.

The story was interesting and easy to follow.

This movie doesn’t have anything big that I disagree with, like Fireproof did…

What I didn’t like:

…However, I didn’t agree with everything completely (but when do I ever agree with everything on a movie completely?)

My Conclusion:

This was actually a pretty good movie, for which I am happy.

I give Courageous 4 out of 5 stars.

I received a screener copy of this dvd from Provident Films, free to review. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
